THE MEMORIAL CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

PARKERSBURG, WV

THE FACES OF JESUS

The large picture collage cross just outside the church office is one of the crosses produced during the Church School (Koinonia) "Faces of Jesus" project.  We are all God's children and God is in all of us.

This cross was designed to have at least three levels of meaning:

·    The faces on the cross are all non-members of our parish.  They are to represent all walks of life, races, and nationalities.  They are on the cross to remind us that Christ came into this world for all peoples and died on the cross for all.

·   The background of the panel are candid pictures of a cross-section of Good Shepherd parishioners.  Their pictures are to remind us to look for the light of Christ in each of us.  We may not always agree.  But, we all are working to know God better and are trying to emulate Christ in our lives.

·   The mirror behind the cross is for each of us to self examine how we reflect Christ in our lives.  Will the people we meet see the light of Christ in our words and actions.

Each of the Sunday School classes prepared their own "Faces of Jesus" cross for their classroom.  These crosses take the first theme with non-members faces on the cross.  These crosses will hopefully find repeated uses for various class lessons.

The cross prepared for the nursery is particularly poignant.  All the faces on this cross are of infants and children, to remind us the Jesus was fully human and lived his childhood much like any child would.
